About

A small workbench for PDFs

PDF Tinker is a set of free PDF tools that run entirely in your web browser. You bring the files; your device does the work.

How it works

When you add a file, your browser reads it from your device into the memory of this tab. The tools then edit or render it with JavaScript that was downloaded with the page, and the result is handed back to you as a download. There is no server-side processing and no upload step, so your documents are never sent anywhere.

After a page has finished loading, the tools keep working without a network connection.

The site counts page views with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which works without cookies or cross-site tracking and never receives what you type, paste or drop into the tools. Details are on the privacy page.

What it’s built with

  • pdf-lib reads, edits and writes PDF files: assembling pages, rotating, stamping text, metadata.
  • PDF.js (from Mozilla) draws page thumbnails, previews and images.
  • fflate packs several files into a ZIP.
  • Type is set in Zilla Slab, IBM Plex Sans and IBM Plex Mono; icons are from Lucide.

Honest limits

  • Encrypted (password-protected) PDFs can’t be edited, because pdf-lib cannot decrypt them. PDF to images can still open them with the password.
  • Everything happens in memory, so very large files can be slow or fail on phones.
  • When pages are copied into a new file (organize, merge, split, extract), bookmark outlines are not carried over and fillable form fields may stop being fillable.
  • Watermarks and page numbers use the standard PDF fonts, which cover Western European characters only.
